I am way overdue for my annual eye appointment. I should be better as I am VERY nearsighted but like how things go sometimes I put it off.
I have an astigmatism and when you put that with my high prescription I wear gas permeable (hard lenses). I have worn them since I was 9 and that adds up to a few years. Although I know they have come a long way with soft lenses for those with astigmatism, my eye doctor and I feel that the gas permeable lenses are the best option for me and my eye history, as the hardest thing about them is the comfort of them, which I have never had an issue with.
Most pairs last 4-7 years. About a year ago I knew the life of my contacts was been close to being up but I hadn’t noticed an issue with my vision and the clarity of the lenses so I put off my appointment. About six months ago I noticed that they were not as clear but nothing too major, I’ll get around to going. At Christmas my family kept making comments about how much I was squinting and I started to realize that maybe my prescription needs a tweak. But the holidays are here and I will get around to it after the New Year.
Fast forward to early March. Still have not made an appointment but seriously thinking about it. Well this morning my contact lens fell off my finger and washed down the drain as the water was running!!! There was no stopping it! It was GONE!
Now I know it would have been smarter if I had the drain closed or maybe not the water running but I am a pro with my lenses. I have worn them for over 30 years- I can do it in the dark, in my sleep. I haven’t dropped a lens down the sink since I was a kid! But today was my unlucky day!
Luckily I have learned my lesson and have kept an old pair of lenses just in case this situation arises. If you can imagine what my pop bottle lens glasses look like (OH MY!!!), you would understand why I do not want to wear them.
The only bad thing is that the prescription is not up to par, so although I am not endangering my life or anyone else’s it needs to be fixed ASAP as I cannot see as well as I want and it is pretty annoying. So luckily I was able to get into my eye doctor tomorrow at 3 to get my eyes checked (which should have been done over a year ago) and my old contacts retired (which should have happened over a year ago) and new ones ordered- because they usually do not have these lenses in stock and if they do, they are not to my prescriptions extent (which also should have been done over a year ago).
But that’s what I get for putting things off that I had no reason in doing so.
I had no idea your eyesight was so bad! I am notorious for doing this too. I just wear your average soft contacts, but even so, never go to the eye doctor until I literally have no contacts left and rip one. It’s a terrible habit!
That is the worst! I was just telling my wife that I literally am on my last contact. If I lose mine, I am screwed too. I have to get an appointment asap as well. I don’t want to be walking around in my glasses! Maybe we should take a day off, go get that done, then test our eyes looking at a beer menu!!! You in?
Ha! This is the second post I’ve read today about eye appointments! And… the second time today I’ve been reminded that I need to make an appointment for myself asap. I think it must be a sign!
