Day 3- 12-pack dilemma

Yesterday I had to stop at the grocery store for a few things on my way home.  As I was walking to put my cart away, I noticed that at the bottom of one of the carts in the cart corral there was a 12-pack of diet Dr. Pepper sitting all by its lonesome.  No other customers around.  Right then I knew I had 3 options..

Option #1 Free 12-pack of diet Dr. Pepper

Thoughts on Option #1- Although I do not drink it personally we have lots of people over at our house and there are many that do so it would definitely not go to waste.  No one is around so I can just grab it and put it in my car and drive away and no one would even know-except me.. and I know that is dishonest and that would bother me

AND I remember when I was a poor college student.  I had a few extra dollars during one of my shopping trips so I treated myself to a 12-pack of diet Pepsi to keep in my dorm room.  I added it to the bottom of my cart after I paid and headed out to my friend’s car with our items.  When we got home I was ready to chill my Diet Pepsi to enjoy later.  My diet Pepsi that I could not find.  We checked her car, not there.  Where could it be..?  Then it dawned on me..  I left it at the bottom of the cart because I usually never have anything down there.  We raced back to the store- maybe it was still at the bottom of the cart..  it had only been about 15 minutes..  Cart was there but no pop.  I was ready to give up but my friend thought maybe someone had returned it to the store. She told me to go in and ask.  I don’t like to do things like that but luckily she went in to ask..  no luck..  Someone had helped themselves to some free pop.  Not only was I out my 12-pack I was out the few dollars that it cost me and to a poor college student that was a fortune…  So that also made it hard from me to take it..  maybe it was a similar situation.

Option #2 Bring it back into the store and let someone know

Thoughts on Option #2– If someone comes back to the store they will hope to find it in the cart bottom.  If they are like me and do not like to do all that talking to strangers and stuff especially for nothing super important they may not even go in and check.

AND the tired person I was at the time, who just wanted to get home,  was not looking forward to walking back to the store and finding someone to help me take care of this.

Option #3 Just walk away and leave it

Thoughts on Option #3– This 12-pack is not my responsibility.  It would be nice to possibly help someone out but not life altering or changing for said buyer (not like it was medicine or anything like that or something expensive).

As I was pushing my cart into the other carts in the corral, seconds away from having to make a decision I heard another voice from behind, “Oh, no someone left something at the bottom of that cart!  Is that yours?”.

Fake look of surprise, “Oh wow, I didn’t even see that!  No it is not mine.”

I quickly walked away leaving the 3 options to the “new” person to decide.

What would you have done?  When I told my husband the story of course all he said was, “Well I hope if it was beer you would have never gotten past Option #1” 🙂

  1. I love John’s thoughts!! 😂
Moral dilemma for sure. I’ve left too many whole bags of groceries on that turnstile at Walmart. Sometimes I go back and it’s there, other times it’s not. Did you lose any sleep over it last night?
